What Happens At A New Patient Comprehensive Exam With A Family Dentist?

Dentist Blog

Going to the dentist is something everyone should take seriously. Many people only go when they have problems, while others go every six months as dentists recommend. If you have not had a dental checkup for years, you might be interested in finding a new dentist. When you do, you can schedule a new patient comprehensive examination. You can expect the following things to occur at this visit.

They Will Ask You About Your Medical History

The first thing to expect is a discussion with the clinic about your medical history. Your medical history matters to the dentist because it can affect your oral health. People with no health problems tend to have healthier teeth, while people with health issues might have more risks. Therefore, your dentist will want to know some information about your health. They will also want to know if you are taking any medications.

They Will Visually Examine Your Mouth

Next, the visit will include a visual examination of your mouth. The dental hygienist will do this, and the dentist also will conduct a brief inspection. They will want to see what they are working with and if there are signs of problems.

They Will Clean Your Teeth

A comprehensive visit also includes teeth-cleaning services. The dental hygienist will probably complete this step, and it requires various procedures. One step involves scraping the plaque off your teeth with dental tools. They will also provide a fluoride treatment to you and brush and floss your teeth.

They Will Take X-Rays

Dentists can see more information about your teeth by taking x-rays. Therefore, you can expect them to take bitewing x-rays of your teeth. They might also suggest taking a panoramic x-ray, which shows all your teeth in one picture.

They May Perform Various Screenings

Finally, a comprehensive visit will include various screenings. The first screening is a cancer screening, and this is when the dentist feels your neck. The dentist might also look under your tongue for signs of problems. Next, they will perform a gumline screening to determine if you have gum disease or signs of gum disease starting to form inside your mouth.

Visiting a new dentist for a comprehensive exam is an important thing to do twice each year, especially if you have not been to a dental clinic for a long time. If you would like to learn more, talk to a family dentist in your area.

Mouth Rinses Are Not Just for Bad Breath

I have always brushed and flossed my teeth daily, but I still had the occasional cavity when I visited the dentist for a check-up. He told me it was normal to have a cavity on occasion and that I shouldn't let it stress me out too much. Well, I am not one to just accept any problem I am having, so I started looking into how to improve my oral hygiene even more. I had always thought mouthwash was just to improve your breath, but I found some that said they helped keep cavities away. I started using one every day before bed. I haven't had a cavity in two years now, and I think the mouth rinse is the reason! I created this blog to remind other people that even if they brush and floss regularly, they can always find ways to take even better care of their teeth.
